Conference Objectives
- Addressing key issues related to the theme of the conference
- To promote dialogue amongst rural health workers, government, NGOs, UN agencies, national international funding agencies and other stakeholders for finding solutions on health issues.
- To highlight and foster opportunities for innovative, comprehensive, participatory rural health models that can be replicated.
Executive Summary of the Conference
Pravara Medical Trust (PMT) in association with Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health in India (AAMRHI) organized 11th Asian Congress of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health from 22nd - 24th Feb 2008 at WelcomHotel Rama International, Aurangabad.
Pravara Medical Trust, who pioneered the concept of Agricultural Medicine & Rural Health in India, jointly hosted this congress in collaboration with International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, India.
This conference was co-sponsored by International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health (IAAMRH), Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, Medical Council of India, Indian Council of Medical Research, Board of Studies for Nuclear Sciences and Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA).
The theme of the conference was “INTEGRATED APPROACH TOWARDS ACHIEVING MILLENNIUM IN ASIA”. Millennium Summit held by United Nations in Geneva in September 2000, attended by 196 countries, set goals & targets commonly known as "Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)" to be achieved by 2015 by each member state.
The conference deliberated on all issues of MDGs - eradicate extreme poverty & hunger, gender equality, improve maternal health, reduce child mortality, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, and ensure environmental sustainability through partnerships.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Jaya Arunachalam, President Working Forum for Women, Chennai. Dr. Ashok Patil, President, International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health, presented the objectives of the conference. After the formal inauguration of the conference, keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Jaya Arunachalam and Dr. Shengli NIU, Senior Specialist, International Labour Organization, Geneva.
Keynote addresses were followed by two plenary sessions. The first plenary session was on “MDG's for Health in Rural Settings”. The speakers for this plenary were: Dr. Jin Soon Kim, Korea, Dr. Shobha Arole, India and Dr. K. Prakashamma, India. The second plenary was on “MDG's in Asia” and the key speakers for this plenary were Dr. Iaso Kawamura, Japan, Dr. Marcos G. Ayangwa, Philippines and Dr. Amelite Bayowan, Philippines. The first days scientific session endded with a Parallel Thematic session on Factors Affecting Rural Health.
The scientific session for the second day started with Symposium on Maternal, New Born and Child Health (MDG 4 & MDG 5): Declaration to Service Delivery – (Sponsored by SIDA). The speakers for this symposium were: Dr. S. Chhabra, Dean MGIMS, Sevagram, India, Dr. Vinoj Manning, IPAS, India, Dr. Dadhich, Project Co-ordinator, Breast Feeding Promotion of India, Ms. Anjali Sakhuja, Programme Officer, SIDA, India, Ms. Asa Andersson, Ist Secretary, SIDA, India.
The symposium was followed by CME on 'Capacity and Responsibilities of Health Universities in Promoting Holistic Human & Social Approach (Sponsored by Medical Council of India)'. The speakers for this CME were Dr. Ved Prakash Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Datta Meghe Medical University, India, Dr. Ashok Patil, President, IAAMRH, India, Ms. Natasha Mayers, QIT, Australia and Prof. Somasundaram, PIMS – DU, India.
The afternoon session witnessed two Parallel Thematic session on Rural Health & Demographic Situation and Gender Bias respectively. Prominent academicians and public health experts from world over presented their scientific papers in these sessions.
The last day of the conference started with Plenary session on “Environment and Occupational Health – Prospectes and Challenges”. The key speakers for this plenary were Dr. Hyun Sul Lim, Chairman, Korean Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health, Professor K. V. Somasundaram, Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. S. C. Tiwari, Professor and Head, Department of Medicine , Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil Rural Medical College, Loni.
The plenary session was followed by parallel thematic session on “Occupational Health and Violence and Crime Against Women” including “Tribal Health”. The scientific proceedings at the conference concluded with the parallel thematic session on “Women Health and Nutrition”.
A large number of posters were presented at the parallel thematic sessions of the conference.
The post lunch session witnessed the discussion on “Draft Aurangabad Declaration”. The draft, after incorporating the changes suggested by the participants, was accepted as “AURANGABAD DECLARATION”. The conference concluded with the General Assembly Meeting of Asian Chapter of International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural Health followed by validectory function.
The executive bureau meeting of IAAMRH - International & Asian was also held during the 11th Asian Congress. The bureau meetings were well attended by its members. Around 250 national and international delegates participated in the conference. Delegates representing 17 countries participated at the 11th Asian Congress and scientific papers were presented on different themes as oral and posters apart from the keynote address, Symposia and CME during a three day conference.
